How muscle and sports injuries can develop

Sometimes you know exactly when an injury happened. You may have felt a muscle pull while running, rolled an ankle on uneven ground or noticed pain after lifting something awkwardly.

Other problems build more gradually. An ache may keep returning during training, a tendon may become increasingly uncomfortable or an area may start struggling with the demands being placed on it.

You don’t need to play sport to benefit from assessment and rehabilitation. Similar problems can affect people who work physically, exercise at the gym, spend time gardening or simply want to stay active.

Common muscle & sports injuries

Muscle strains

Muscle strains can cause local pain, tenderness and discomfort when stretching or using the affected muscle. The calf, hamstring and thigh are common areas.

Ligament sprains

A twist, awkward landing or sudden change of direction can injure the ligaments supporting a joint. Ankle sprains are particularly common and may cause pain, swelling or a feeling of instability.

Tendon pain (tendinopathy)

Tendon pain often develops gradually when the demands placed on a tendon exceed what it is currently able to tolerate. Running, jumping, gripping and repeated lifting are common examples.

Muscle aches & tightness

Muscles can become sore, tight or uncomfortable following unfamiliar activity, repeated effort or a change in workload. Symptoms may also build gradually without a single obvious cause.

Some injuries require further investigation or medical assessment. If we think this is necessary, we will explain why and help you decide on the appropriate next step.

Getting back to activity

Recovering from an injury is not only about waiting for the pain to disappear. As symptoms settle, gradually rebuilding movement, strength and your ability to tolerate activity becomes an important part of recovery.

We can help you understand what you can continue doing, what may need adjusting temporarily and how to build back up without trying to do too much too soon.

Feeling better doesn’t always mean you’re ready

Everyday walking or normal daily tasks may feel comfortable before your body is ready for harder running, lifting, jumping or changing direction.

Where appropriate, rehabilitation can progress towards the specific demands of your work, exercise or sport rather than stopping as soon as the pain improves.

How we can help

The right approach depends on the problem, how long it has been bothering you and what you want to get back to doing.

Care may involve sports rehabilitation, sports massage or chiropractic treatment. For certain persistent tendon problems, shockwave therapy may also be considered alongside rehabilitation.

Clear assessment

We look at how the problem started, your movement, strength and what brings on your symptoms. We’ll explain what we find and whether further investigation is needed.

Hands-on care

Sports massage, soft tissue treatment or joint mobilisation may be used to help reduce discomfort and improve movement where appropriate.

Strength & rehabilitation

Progressive exercise can help rebuild strength and improve your ability to cope with the demands of work, exercise and everyday activity.

Return to activity

We can gradually reintroduce the movements and demands you need, whether that means lifting at work, running, gym training or changing direction in sport.
